And I think this is the point of the chapter. Up to this point they've largely been ambling along blind, following this path and that as events led them. "Our Purpose": what do we live for? What to we fight for? What are we willing to die for?

Panel three looks like a set-up for a "what could possibly go wrong" or a "be careful what you wish for", or even a "hold my beer".
