Sliding always seemed a little strange to me. If you drop to sharp then you just kind of bounced off the ground.

Theoretically higher velocity, more stable, depending on the angle. It can be more graceful to slide down the side of a grade, as opposed to trying to run and tumbling head over. On the other hoof, if the angle is too steep and you hit the bottom hard enough to shatter your legs, you haven't really gained much.
